Structure and dynamics of the plasma membrane: a single-molecule study in Trypanosoma brucei

T. brucei exhibits a dense membrane anchored VSG-coat for its protection against the host’s immune response and therefore plays an important role in the survival of the parasite in the bloodstream of the host. Hence, the general aim of my project is to gain insights into the structure and dynamics of T. brucei’s plasma membrane. Our favorite technique is single-molecule fluorescence microscopy, which is a high-resolution method and allows imaging on the nanometer and millisecond timescale. I will use this method to combine SPT of VSGs and super-resolution of cellular structures in two-color experiments.
