Applied biodiversity research explores the role of biodiversity in habitats used by humans.
In the area of basic ecological research, the professorship investigates how management decisions influence the functional biodiversity of arthropods and how these affect changes in the provisioning of ecosystem functions.

In the area of inter- and transdisciplinary research, the professorship investigates whether and how the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem functions is considered in decision-making processes. The professorship thus pursues the overarching goal of bridging the gap between ecological and social science research, and between research and decision-makers in society.
